Frequently Asked Questions

  • At what age can my child enrol to Greek School?

Normally, children are able to enrol at the School after their sixth birthday. Children may enrol earlier depending on language ability, behavioural maturity and providing there are available spaces at the School.

  • Is there nursery education available at the school?

The School runs Nursery and Reception classes during the week, providing there are adequate children numbers to set up a class. Please register your interest with the School Headteacher and you will be advised on whether Nursery and Reception classes will run on any particular year.

  • I am not sure whether I should register my child at the Greek School or whether I should offer private tuition.

By attending the Greek School, children benefit not only from acquiring Greek language skills but they also have the opportunity to participate in cultural activities, school events and learn traditional greek songs and dances. Both the children and their parents make lots of new friends too!

  • I would like to enrol my child but I am not sure whether it will settle in well. What should I do?

The School offers a free three-week trial on request. During the trial parents will be given feedback on how the child is settling in so that they can make a decision on whether they would like the child to continue.

  • My child is English-speaking and there is no Greek-speaking family member. Can it still attend?

The School recognises that Greek-speaking children learn differently from English-speaking children and for this reason offers classes tailored to the different abilities of children. Generally, Greek-speaking children attend School on Saturdays and English-speaking children on Fridays. The Headteacher will inform you following your child’s assessment which class it is likely to benefit the most from.

  • I missed September's enrolment. Can I still register my child?

You can register the child at any time during the academic year, although it is preferable that the child enrols in September so that it does not miss out.

  • Does the school prepare children for exams?

The School offers two preparatory classes for the GCSE exams. Depending on numbers and demand, it may offer A level preparation classes.

  • I am not of Christian faith but would still like my child to benefit from attending the Greek school. Can my child be exempt from religious activities?

The Greek School is open to children from all backgrounds, including religious and ethnic backgrounds. If you would like your child to attend the School but be exempt from religious activities, please notify the School in writing and the child will be exempt from participation in religious activities.

  • I would like my child to attend the Greek school but I am concerned that I may find it difficult to pay the school fees.

The School makes every effort to keep fees as low as possible and a lot of work is undertaken by unpaid volunteers to keep costs low. The School offers different payment methods to assist parents, for example by termly or monthly instalments. Parents facing exceptional circumstances can request a tailored payment plan.

  • Who is responsible for safeguarding at the school?

All our teachers are DBS checked and have completed safeguarding training. The Headteacher is the safeguarding lead. The School has in place suitable policies and procedures to ensure the health & safety and safeguarding of children at all times at the School.

I would be grateful if you could pass on my thanks to all those involved in arranging the Greek speaking class for the children on Friday evening. In particular I would like to thank Maria for the amazing way she has managed to engage xxx and already in just a couple of weeks I have seen an enormous improvement ,particularly in her confidence in speaking the language. xxx has attended Greek school for a number of years now and whilst she has developed her knowledge of the grammar, and can read and write Greek exceptionally well, as a child with English speaking parents she has never learnt to speak the language to any particular degree nor has she usually been able to understand what she was reading.
xxx was reluctant to attend these speaking classes and her enthusiasm for the Saturday class was beginning to diminish as she believed she would never be able to learn to speak Greek . However, Maria has managed to totally engage xxx and she looks forward to these classes, (which I'm sure you'll agree being on a Friday evening is an achievement in itself). They are an enormous benefit to xxx who now believes she will grasp the speaking of Greek.
Also I was very impressed that Maria took the time to explain the form these lessons would take and the principles of teaching she would adopt. She is clearly a very capable teacher with very good insight into the needs of the children and how to achieve those needs.

The speaking lessons are, for me, the missing piece of the puzzle, without which I doubt Sophia would be progressing and she is no longer on the verge of giving up.

A very big thank you to all

My two children, aged 12 and 7, both attend the Three Hierarchs Greek School every Saturday. They have made huge progress with their spoken and written Greek and enjoy participating in the school's varied cultural activities and school events. They have made lots of friends and are looking forward to playing with them every Saturday! Their teachers are brilliant- they are excellent role models and inspire the children to learn through educational activities.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award is designed to encourage young people to develop new skills and our Greek school and is committed to supporting our students from Year 9 onwards who are working toward the award.

Learning a modern foreign language such as Greek is a skill, and we are happy to provide our students with evidence on the Greek language skills acquired through attendance at the school. We also offer Greek lessons to non-registered students who wish to acquire Greek language skills in preparation for the skills section of the DofE award.

Volunteering opportunities are also available at the school and our students working toward the volunteering section of the DofE award are encouraged to choose activities ranging from classroom assistance and running the school library to assisting with workshops and fundraising events.

We are confident that the skills gained will increase confidence, bed in valuable life experiences and create enjoyable lasting memories and we wish our students every success with their progress through the award.

For further information about the DofE award and how to achieve it we recommend you visit the DofE website: www.dofe.org
